Invitation to BRM 400 km Centenaire – Ogulin – Međugorje

Turn the spokes for full spoons!
Invitation to BRM 400 km Centenaire – Ogulin – Međugorje

By taking part in the brevet you are providing at least one needy child with food during a whole year (In cooperation with Mary’s Meals)

About the ride
The first edition of the Ogulin-Međugorje ride last year was a smashing success so we are repeating it this year!

We are riding again for 410 km through rich and diverse scenery of Lika, Dalmatia and Hercegovina. We start from the city of fairytales – Ogulin, pass through the royal city of Knin, glorious Sinj and Imotska Krajina, and finish in Međugorje, the city of peace.

During the first part of the route we ride during the night, at an elevated altitude, so lower temperatures are possible. Later during the day we pass through Dalmatian Zagora and Hercegovina, known for hot weather in July. It is therefore wise to clothe in layers and be ready for both hot and cold weather. In any case, 4,000 meters of climbing in total is certain to rid us of any boredom during the ride.

We will again try to collect funds for school meals for needy children in cooperation with Mary’s Meals. The participation fee for the ride is 60 EUR and anything that you give above that amount we will transfer directly to Mary’s Meals. You can always donate directly to their account (HR7923600001102102666, with the description “Breveto 400 – donacija”).

About Mary’s Meals
Mary’s Meals is a global movement in operation since 2002. Back then they ensured meals for two hundred children. Today, thanks to this organization, over two million children receive a meal at their place of education every day. Children from the poorest parts of Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe and South America get a chance for healthy life and education, which for many of them is the only way out of poverty.

Mary’s Meals are also a unique humanitarian organization because, thanks to their many volunteers, they operate with minimal expenses, so that at least 93% of the donated funds reach the children who need it. Only 22 EUR feeds a child during the whole year!

BRM 400 km Ogulin – Međugorje 22.7. 2022. – Turn the spokes for full spoons!

By taking part in the brevet you are providing at least one needy child with food during a whole year (In cooperation with Mary’s Meals)

About the ride
I took a similar route four times already as a cycling pilgrimage of sorts (first two times with the co-organizer Dinko). I enjoyed the undertaking every time and, inspired by some people, I started thinking how nice it would be to organize such a ride for others. So the idea is spending time together on two wheels over the distance of 410 km through rich and diverse scenery of Lika, Dalmatia and Hercegovina. We start from the city of fairy tales – Ogulin, pass through the royal city of Knin, glorious Sinj and Imotska Krajina, and finish in Međugorje, the city of peace.

During the first part of the route we ride during the night, at an elevated altitude, occasionally through the woods so lower temperatures are possible. Later during the day we pass through Dalmatian Zagora and Hercegovina, known for hot weather in July. It is therefore wise to clothe in layers and be ready for both hot and cold weather. In any case, 4000 meters of climbing in total is certain to rid us of any boredom during the ride.

I am thankful for the great team of co-organizers who all readily accepted the idea. Each of them will contribute in their own unique way to making the ride a joyfull and unforgetable experience for all of us. I’d also like to thank BK Sljeme for the additional logistical support.

Last but not least, in cooperation with Mary’s Meals (an organization whose foundation was inspired by Međugorje), donor companies will sponsor one or several needy children with a school meal during the whole year for each rider that finishes the ride successfully. So, more riders means more fed and happy children. Therefore: turn the spokes for full spoons!

Ridescape LRM 1600 km Zagreb-Krakow-Zagreb or In search of the royal city…

How I was inspired for the title…
Namely, now more and more distant year 1986, the book In Search of the Glass City by Željko Malnar and Borna Bebek appeared in the bookstores. It was a travel story about traveling to the Middle East, Asia, and Oceania and fantasizing about life ideals.
The youth in the former Yugoslavia lagged a little behind the Western trends, the remnants of the hippie culture of a more modern form were still rolling from west to east. In fact, only “nerds” knew what was in at that moment in London or New York. The book has experienced a double edition in two years. There were many who wanted to know or dreamed about what was happening behind the seven seas and the seven mountains in the time of Yugoslav New Primitivism… I recommend the book to travelogue readers!
Let’s go back to the LRM where you will search for the royal city of Kraków following a default route that will lead you through several Central European countries.
Why Kraków?!
I first visited that city in 2017. I arrived there by car and immediately upon my return I started sketching a bike ride towards its direction. Due to various circumstances, this idea slowly slipped to the bottom of the bucket list and jumped back to the top in June 2020, but another COVID lockdown quickly put it right back to the bottom of the list.
Finally, this year during the North Cape 4,000 tour I rode my bike to Kraków, the former city of the Polish kings. I liked the city, the people and then the “Polish pan-Slavic culture”, so why not share those good impressions with like-minded cyclists!?
The basic direction is visible in the photo. The route will mostly lead to less busy roads and bypass larger cities except for Bratislava and Kraków.
Although there are not many mountain sections, the marathon will have its charms for climbers. I’ve tried to get the exact data but Garmin Connect, Ride with GPS and Openrunner did not come up with the same number. Each platform offers its own amount of climbing, from 10,100 to 13,500 metres. As Openrunner is used by the ACP, I have to inform you that we will have to overcome 13,500 m of ascent.
We will do most of the ascent by crossing the High Tatras (Vysoké Tatry) on the border of Poland and Slovakia and the Low Tatras (Nizké Tatry) at the second pass through Slovakia. There, encounters with bears, deer, wild boar and lynx are possible, especially at night. We will cross the Drava, Mura, Danube, and Vistula twice with different bridges… Culinary delicacies from seven different countries will be available to us.
Navigation files and maps of individual stages will be available later at this site. We will run the Brevet marathon according to LRM rules with an emphasis on bike packing, which does not mean that accompanying vehicles are not allowed. Namely, baggage delivery, drop bag service, will not be supported.
Participants will be provided with GPS tracking during the marathon, lunch on the first day of the ride at the first checkpoint, accommodation and food in Krakow, and a dry meal at the finish line.
During September or October 2022, finishers will receive personalized medals and certified randonnee cards by mail.
Applications and registration fees are needed to be sent through March and April so that everything arrives on time and is sufficiently organized.
The maximum number of participants will be 60.

What will be prepared and in what order for the participants other than the ride itself?

  • Official applications will be possible from March 1st to April 30th 2022 via the website. You will receive a notification on time.
  • August 5th meeting of all participants in Sveta Nedelja to give the last instructions, share start numbers, gps trackers, official marathon jerseys…
  • August 6th start of the marathon. All checkpoints, except for the first one in Jurovčak, the fifth in Krakow, and the finish line in Sveta Nedelja, are at the gas stations that are open 24/7.
  • Lunch for all participants at the first checkpoint, Wine House Hažić, Jurovčak.
  • Sleep and a meal in Krakow.
  • Dry meal at the finish line in Sveta Nedelja.

You will receive timely information about all important details via e-mail or the Randonneurs Croatie website.

Thank you for your time and attention,
Siniša
